How the ATS score works
An applicant tracking system does not read your resume the way a recruiter does. It parses the file into structured fields and compares the extracted text against the requirements in the posting. This checker reproduces that in three sub-scores:
Skills match
How many of the skills the posting names as required or preferred actually appear in your resume, in the posting's own wording.
Keyword density
Whether those terms appear often enough, and in the places that carry weight — your summary and most recent roles rather than a list at the bottom.
Formatting
Whether the document parses cleanly: single column, standard section headings, consistent dates, no tables, text boxes or header-only contact details.
The overall ATS score weights those three together, and the report lists your matched keywords, missing keywords and missing skills so you can see precisely what to fix.
How to read and improve your result
- 80 and above. Strong match. Check the missing keywords list for any real experience you simply never wrote down.
- 60 to 79. Relevant but under-worded. Rewrite bullets to use the posting's vocabulary for the work you already did.
- Below 60. The resume reads as a different role. Reorder toward the relevant experience, rewrite the summary, and treat genuinely missing skills as a learning list — never as a claim.
Improving the score never means inventing experience. Renaming real work in the employer's vocabulary is legitimate; claiming tools you have not used fails at interview.
